The Budweiser Shootout is a 70 lap, 175 mile all star Nextel Cup non points race held at Daytona, one week before the Daytona 500. Each driver must complete at least one pit stop under green and the race must end under green-flag conditions, even if the length of the race has to be extended. Drivers may pit under yellow, but the pit stop will not count as their required stop, and caution laps will count toward the 70-lap total. Drivers qualify, not teams. If a driver leaves a team, the new team will be in the race. To qualify:

  1. Each driver/team must participate in Budweiser's promotion of pole qualifying (a decal).
  2. The driver/team must qualify on the pole (or be the fastest program qualifier if the pole winner does not participate) of a Winston Cup points event in the previous year.
  3. Past winners from previous "Budweiser Shootout", "Bud Shootout", and "Busch Clash" events are eligible.
  4. There is no more second round qualifying.

The field starting positions are chosen by random draw.

A Few Notes on Provisionals

The provisional rules are what they are. This is my best rendition of how I understand them.

There are 7 provisional positions given in each Winston Cup points race. The first 36 positions in each race are assigned by 1 qualification session. Starting in 2001, there is only 1 qualifying session.

Positions 37-42 are based on car owner points. The 43rd position is normally reserved for a past champion, with a limit of eight per year. Usually the most recent champ if two fail to qualify, but NASCAR is not always consistent and makes a ruling at that particular race. If there is no past champion that needs a provisional, all seven are based on car owner points.

For the first 5 races of the season, provisionals are given in order of car owners points at season's end the previous year. After the 5th race, they are based upon the current season's car owners standings. There are unlimited provisionals given to car who's owners are in the top 25.

If all provisional are not used during a race and someone outside the top 25 in owners points has attempted to qualify but did not, then they will be eligible to use it.

If 46cars attempt to make a race, the first 36 will make the race based on their qualifying times. That leaves us with 10 cars fighting for 7 provisionals.

If there is a past champion in the field, he will be awarded the past champions provisional. If more than 1 past champ., it goes to the most recent champ. This will leave 9 cars for 6 provisionals. They will go in order of car owner points to top 6 cars in the standings. The other 3 will pack up and go home.

All teams that attempt to qualify get car owner points, even if they do not qualify for the race.
